Using any appropriate means, students must create an artwork based on a complex dataset. The artwork can take any form the student chooses, from static image, interactive application
sound art, film, collage, sculpture, etc. The goal of this assignment is to explore the use of a dataset to create art. The final artwork should be thought–provoking, meaningful and/or critically
In addition to the artwork, students must write 300–350 word artist statement that describes techniques used and the motivation behind the creation of the artwork. Questions to be answered
can be from the following:
What is the dataset in this project?
Why did you choose this dataset – what is the dataset important – artistically, politically, socially, personally?
3. How have you worked on the dataset for the purposes of your artwork?
4. What is the experience of the data like? How is your artwork’s visuals related the dataset
What have you learnt from the dataset that you did not already know? What is surprising, ironic or interesting about the this work?
6. Based on your experience in class, how do you feel about data visualization as a science of displaying information vs an art form. is it one or both? Where does your
proposed project stand in relation to these two sides of the coin?
